My State of Mind on Last Night’s State of the Union Speech

• On the surface, at least, President Obama’s speech sounded like something Bill Clinton or George H.W. Bush would have given. It featured many items likely to appeal to Republicans and conservatives, including: reducing the corporate tax rate, eliminating pork barrel spending, and free trade and medical malpractice reform. This throws a wrench into the plans of those on the right whose lone strategy over the last couple of years has been to simply reject everything the President says or does. The next election is going to be interesting. Of course, the speech probably would have been quite different if the November elections had gone differently…

• That said, I found it odd that many of my hard-left Facebook and Twitter pals loved the speech.

• While appealing in spots, the speech was rather boring, and I can’t help but think that the unorthodox seating arrangements took some of the normal fire out of the crowd.

• I found the President’s subtle-yet-forceful nationalistic tone to be somewhat at odds with some of his prior, more globalist leanings.

• “Win the Future” is not the greatest catchphrase for a presidential address. And not just because its acronym opens it up to instant ridicule. It reminds me of something from “Mortal Kombat” or “The Karate Kid.” (Chant it a few times to yourself in a foreign accent for full effect.)

• Michelle Bachmann needs an eye coach.
